Job Seekers

Until recently, people were only interested in permanent jobs, and companies preferred to offer permanent employment opportunities for a number of reasons.

However, the recent economic events have shifted the employers’ preferences towards a more fluid and flexible workforce thus giving rise to temporary employment opportunities. Whilst we continue to see growth in the creation of new jobs, companies are remaining cautious and temp jobs have started to overtake permanent roles in terms of popularity and feasibility. Studies have also found that while there are more jobs out there now than in recent months, there are also more people applying for temp jobs. So, if you’re struggling to find a permanent job or don’t want to tie yourself down to one role for a long period of time, temping could be your answer.

Pros of temping:

  • You are in control of your career and it’s far easier to take career breaks and fit your job around your life. Although not having a fixed job may be daunting at first, it’s easy to become addicted to the freedom of doing temporary work when you want and where you want.
  • Different companies use different systems to get the job done, even if they’re doing the same work. For example, IT and internet jobs have hundreds of different computer programmes to contend with, sales jobs utilise different databases and even catering, hospitality, retail and wholesale jobs have different ways of dealing with customers and their customer profile also tends to be as diverse as their modus operandi. By choosing to go for temping across various roles, you will learn new skills and see how different companies operate, making it far more employable and really enriching your CV as you will gain a wealth of experience through different ways of doing things, diversity of corporate culture, and a healthier interaction with colleagues, customers, and managers.
  • And that brings us on to experience. If you manage to work on a couple of contracts with respected companies, you’ll find it immediately makes your CV more impressive which could mean the difference between ending up on the Yes or No pile. It is often said that ”it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. Although not entirely true, there is something to be said for building up contacts. Whether it’s for references or meeting likeminded people who may be able to help you further down the line, temping will definitely lengthen your contacts book and give you more exposure opportunities. Some jobs are far more competitive than others.

If you’re looking to break into such competitive industries, then a temporary job could be a very important foot in the door. Temp work allows you to take more time out for yourself. Recent reports have shown that more workers than ever before are suffering with work-related stress. Happiness in a job has never been more important to the individual employee and a temp job can help you to gain perspective. It’s important to remember that as a temporary employee you still have exactly the same rights as permanent employees, therefore you will still receive your pro-rata benefits like sick leave, holiday allowance, government bonus and regular pay. You are also expected to be given the same quality of working conditions as your permanent colleagues, including the rate of pay.

Thinking of a career change later in life? Or are you a graduate or school leaver undecided which career path to take? A temporary job can answer some important questions before you take the plunge. Remember that if you are after something more permanent, many temporary jobs may actually lead you to permanent roles faster, particularly if you prove yourself to be invaluable to the company. Never turn down a good temp role just because you want a permanent contract – you never know where it might lead.
